Samsung unveiled the much-awaited Samsung Galaxy Gear on Wednesday in Berlin at IFA 2013. The smartwatch is a perfect companion for Samsung Galaxy Note 3, but it will work with other smartphones in the future as well, as confirmed by Samsung.
Samsung mentioned that earlier Galaxy series handsets – Galaxy S4, SIII and Note II – will receive the Android 4.3 update next month, which will enable the use of Samsung Galaxy Gear. The question that bothered many users was the compatibility of Samsung Galaxy Gear with other Android devices. Now, Samsung has confirmed that Galaxy Note 3 will not be the only device compatible with Samsung Galaxy Gear, and it will also work with non-Galaxy smartphones in the near future.
“Right now the specific APIs and functionality are tied to the Galaxy Note 3. For obvious reasons we are looking for additional devices to support it,” Samsung director of product marketing Ryan Bidan said. “We will announce those when they come, but right now it is Galaxy Note 3 specific.”
Samsung uses Bluetooth 4.0 LE to pair the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear, which is available in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Currently, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is available for Nexus 4 and other Google edition handsets, but Samsung Galaxy Gear won’t work with them as there are some programming interfaces that are built-in Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that makes it compatible with Samsung Galaxy Gear.
