In the cutthroat world of tech marketing, it is all about grabbing headlines, or stealing them from one another. So on the proposed September 4th date when Samsung is set to unveil its cross-genre Galaxy Note 3 smartphone/tablet and smartwatch prototype, Sony is planning to upstage the whole kit and caboodle with its very own hi-tech gadgetry, the SmartShot Digital Lens Camera attachments for Apple iOS & Android devices.
After previous “leaks & rumors,” more detailed images have appeared along with yet-to-authenticated information. Internally known as “Smart Shot,” a term derived from “smart-phone” and Sony’s own “Cyber-Shot” camera line, the Sony SmartShot devices are from a relatively new “lens-camera” product sector. Using wireless connectivity, either through WiFi or NFC, the accessories are compatible with all Apple iOS and Android devices thank to downloadable Sony PlayMemories App.
Instead of just one, as previously reported, Sony is planning to launch two devices this Wednesday instead. The line includes the DSC-QX10, an attachment featuring a 18 megapixel CMOS image sensor and a f/3.3-5.9 lens, the same arrangement found on Sony CyberShot WX150 digital camera. For those looking for “more oomph” in their smartphone photos, there is the DSC-QX100 with a 20.2 megapixel Exmor R image sensor and a f/1.8-4.9 lens from Carl Zeiss. Sounds familiar?
That’s because its from the much coveted Sony CyberShot RX100M II camera. Full image stabilization, capable of zoom, focus, control of exposure and white balance, the lens-cameras can record hi-res HD video in 1080/30p as well. Priced at around $250 for the QX10 and $450 for the QX100, no official date of release is set at this time.
