The Belarusian military industrial complex is ready to redesign the Su-27 aircrafts which have been decommissioned, Chairman of the Belarusian State Military Industrial Committee Sergei Gurulev told reporters on 31 January, BelTA has learnt.
Sergei Gurulev noted that it is possible to equip these fighter planes with advanced avionics and up-to-date weapons and protection equipment. As far as weapons are concerned, they will be of both air-to-air and air-to-surface classes.
Sergei Gurulev noted that the Defense Ministry, not the State Military Industrial Committee, makes decisions on equipment overhaul. The Belarusian head of state had earlier suggested modernizing Su-27, and the Defense Ministry made a decision pursuant to this suggestion.
BelTA reported earlier that in August 2013 Defense Minister Yuri Zhadobin told media that Su-27 had been withdrawn from service in Belarus. In November 2013 Alexander Lukashenko suggested that Su-27 aircrafts not be decommissioned in a hurry. Back then Alexander Lukashenko said: “I’ve spoken in favor of thinking it over and preserving these aircraft for some period of threat regardless of the costs.” [via]
